Monteverde, Costa Rica

The cloud forest
Monteverde is one of the best preserved cloud forests in the world and, interestingly, thanks to private, not public initiative.

The landscapes are beautiful and the greenery very lush but the biggest attraction is its birdlife (especially the quetzal, and the hummingbirds) and the sloth, that can be regularly seen in night walks in some of the private haciendas around the park.

When to go: Monteverde is a fairly 'moist' destination at the best of times, but the wet season (May to November) can make negotiating reserves and hiking paths nearly impossible.
