Tortuguero beach with storm clouds
Costa Rica is one of the best wildlife destinations in the world. Small, extremely friendly, easy to handle and with superb national parks with unique fauna, such as Tortuguero, Monteverde, Corcovado, Manuel Antonio...

Tortuguero is in the East Coast (the Atlantic Coast), and is of course world famous for the marine turtles, that come ashore in their thousands (arribadas) to lay their eggs in the beach.

But there is much more: a superb bird life, sloths, several types of monkeys, frogs (including the charismatic red-eyed tree frog), butterflies, etc.

When to go: The Green Sea and Hawksbill turtle's nesting season runs from July to October with the peak in August, and the Leatherback turtles nest from February to April.

Come prepared: the peak nesting season is in the rainy season when Caribbean rains can blow in on a north wind and stay for weeks.
